At MedGyn, our mission extends beyond products—we’re committed to supporting the clinicians who bring essential care to women around the world, especially in underserved communities.
Recently, we had the privilege of contributing to a meaningful medical mission in Panama by donating our LED lighted speculums to a dedicated nurse, Barbara Kern-Pieh, who volunteers through her church. Each year, this team travels to provide critical OB/GYN services to women who may otherwise have little or no access to care. Additionally, Barbara and her team of healthcare providers, were able to administer essential care. They were able to see about 100 patients each day during their trip. The team consisted of 3 medical providers, 2 dentists, several dental support staff, 3 RNs, several medical interpreters, and many volunteers.
The impact of this work goes far beyond clinical treatment—it’s about compassion, dignity, and human connection. “We had a fabulous experience this year in Panama. Many of us in Minnesota are trauma fatigued trying to care for patients in a hostile social environment. Many of our patients are living in fear and can’t come for medical appointments, groceries, or school. It was reassuring to be able to provide care for so many with gratitude as the only reaction,” Barbara said.
In settings where resources are limited, even the most basic tools can make a significant difference. Barbara shared how the donated LED lighted speculums helped overcome real challenges in the field. “The exam table has no stirrups—I have patients place their feet on my knees, I use a headlamp flashlight, and the lighted speculum worked perfectly,” she said.

These kinds of conditions highlight the importance of reliable, easy-to-use instruments designed with both clinicians and patients in mind. In this case, the built-in illumination of the speculum helped streamline exams and improve visibility—without the need for additional equipment.
Beyond the immediate impact, the generosity extended even further. “I donated the surplus to the local health clinic. They were delighted to have them,” Barbara added.
Moments like these reinforce the ripple effect that access to medical tools can create—supporting not only short-term missions but also leaving a lasting resource for local healthcare providers.
Despite a demanding schedule and even unexpected travel delays, Barbara and her team remain deeply committed to their work. They will soon be sharing more about their experience through a presentation at their church, continuing to raise awareness and inspire others to get involved.
At MedGyn, we are honored to play a small part in these efforts. Supporting clinicians who deliver care in challenging environments is one of the many ways we strive to advance women’s health globally. Because every woman—no matter where she lives—deserves access to quality care.
